The Cardinal Fall Hardball Tournament
(Nov. 22-24, 2002)

The newest Washington tournament, organized by Kurt Johnson and played on Arlington Y's two American courts, drew 17 amateur players from the mid-Atlantic region. The 50+ draw was won by Alexander (Sandy) Martin of Owings Mills, MD, ranked #2 nationally at 55+. He cruised through the 11-player draw, beating Howard Day of Washington's University Club in the finals, 15-13, 15-13, 18-16. The 70+ draw went to John Pearson of Morgantown, WV, winner of a 4-game championship match against Austin Graff of Washington's Metropolitan Club, 15-9, 14-16, 16-14, 15-8.

In a pro exhibition match, Ed Chilton, club pro at the Wilmington, Delaware, Country Club, defeated Ghirma Meres of the University Club, 3-0. An amateur exhibition featured the #4 open player in the country, NYC's Rob Dinerman, against Bryce Harding of Arlington Y. Bryce has not played much competitive hardball in a long time, but did just fine, winning in five.

Kurt says the Cardinal Fall (named after the season and the Virginia state bird) will be back next year, possibly 1-2 weeks earlier, and Howard and Ghirma are going to be working with Kurt to make it even bigger and better than the original.
