Juniors visit to Belfast

Results Head Coach and NCSRA junior representative Brian O'Hora, took a group of very fortunate local juniors to Europe and the British Isles recently, where they played several tournaments and an invitational challenge against the Belfast Boat Club. Our local women's champ Natalie Grainger also accompanied the group. A flavor of the trip is provided by this reproduction of a South Belfast News article on the invitational match.

DC Youth Programs
Two urban youth programs  - SquashEmpower (SE) and The DC Juniors Squash Academy - are being developed for the DC region. The programs are based on Boston's  SquashBusters and seek to provide enrichment, increased athletic performance and improved opportunities for disadvantaged DC youth through squash, academic tutoring and mentoring. The programs rely on volunteers and financial donations. Wendy Lawrence has provided details on the  DC Juniors Squash Academy here. SquashEmpower  was launched on 2nd April at the YMCA in association with 'Healthy Kids Day'. Connie Barnes reports a successful event. Also, check out www.SquashEmpower.org.

Tri-state Area Juniors Shine
Result's coach Wendy Lawrence reports some great performances this year from local juniors in both National and area events. Jake Gross, now at Tufts College, led the charge finishing with a 4th place in the Nationals. David Canner, Peter Sopher, Andy Maruca and Jo Powden all had top 10 finishes.

Meanwhile in local high school competition, the Potomac School showed their strength by sweeping girl's and boy's competitions in the Mid-Atlantic region. Full report available.

US Junior Women Squash Trials
The US Junior Women Squash Trials are coming to town. It is a big deal to be picked to play for your country, and the girls have been working really hard to make the team, according to assistant coach Natalie Grainger.  This July the US team will be competing in Belgium at the Women's World Junior Championships. The trials will be held in DC on the week 25th-27th March at several clubs.  There are lots of fun squash activities planned for all, and a social event is slated for the Saturday night, see full details. The community would love to see you there.

The FitzGerald grant provides impressive juniors with funds to continue their chosen sport of squash. Bryan Keating received $125 for squash lessons as this years' most promising player. Bryan has only been playing squash for a few months but shows dedication well beyond his experience. On receipt of the award, Bryan’s comment was, 'I am looking forward to using these lessons to strengthen my backhand and work on my rails.  I would also like to work on playing more shots to the back of the court.  My goal is to keep improving so that I am the strongest squash player I can be'. Congratulations to Bryan, watch out for this young man with loads of potential. Meanwhile, Jake Gross was honored at the '04 Fitzgerald Cup for his recent National level achievements and as one of the local grown top talents. Jake received a $125 scholarship.
