Bethesda Silver Tourney (Nov 2005)

The aisles at Bethesda were packed again with fifty kids and their enthusiastic parents on November 18 through 20. The kids filled eight flights and provided  a somewhat raised standard of competition over last year. The visitors came from as far as Vermont,
with NYC, Philly, Delaware, Baltimore and North Carolina also represented. Pictured is BU13 runner-up, Robby Rassmussen, being congratulated by local champ Patrick Chifunda.

Like a Hit with Chris Walker? (September 2005)
As part of the SquashEmpower urban youth program fundraising weekend, PSA Champion Chris Walker will be holding 1/2 hour clinics at Sports Club/LA on September 24th from 11:30am - 1pm. California Crusing

Local juniors, Joe Powden and Matt Tolf, travelled to California to train with their former coach, Mark Allen and former world #2, Chris Walker. Allen now coaches at the Bay Club in San Francisco and is the US Girls National

Team Coach, and Walker coaches in Greenwich, CT. The juniors trained with Allen and Walker during the week then  played in the California Junior Open in San Francisco and the San Diego Junior Open. Joe Powden won the California Junior Open U-15 division and was a finalist in the San Diego event.

National Girls' Team Tryouts at Results

An incredibly tough and talented 17-year-old from Seattle ran away with the national team trials at Results this weekend. Claire Rein-Weston, currently ranked #6, the only player who made the trip without coach or family, beat all three of her opponents, Christina Fast, from Rye, NY, #5, Marilla Hiltz, #4 from Brooklyn Heights, and Casey Reilly of Philadelphia.

The top three ranked players had already been placed on the team on the basis of their results in four national selection events - Lily Lorentzen, of Greenwich, CT, Lauren McCrery, Wilmington, DE, and Audrey Duboc, Greenwood Village, CO. The challenge round in Washington was called to settle the selection of the last team member from among four equally-talented players.

Rein-Weston's composure proved decisive. She was unshakeable throughout, consistently battling back from huge deficits without the slightest evidence of anxiety. Down 2-7 in her first game against Reilly, she tied it at eight, only to lose, 9-10, followed by a 5-9 loss in game two, but she came back to win games three and four. Then, falling behind 2-6 and 6-8 in the 5th, she still played her steady, tenascious game and pulled it out, 10-8 - a pattern that was repeated in her other matches. On the other hand, no one came back against Rein-Weston, at least not on this weekend. When she took a lead, she kept it. All the results:

Friday April 18 12:00 noon Claire Rein-Weston def. Casey Reilly, 3-2 (9-10, 5-9, 9-1, 9-7, 10-8)
      Christina Fast def. Marilla Hiltz, 3-0 (9-1, 9-1, 9-6)

    6:00 pm Casey Reilly def. Christina Fast, 3-1 (7-9, 9-5, 10-8, 9-5)
      Claire Rein-Weston def. Marilla Hiltz, 3-1 (9-1, 1-9, 9-7, 9-6)

Saturday April 19 11:00 am Marilla Hiltz def. Casey Reilly, 3-0 (10-9, 9-4, 9-7)
      Claire Rein-Weston def. Christina Fast, 3-1 (7-9, 9-4, 9-5, 9-4)

2001 Virginia Junior Championships

The five new international courts at Episcopal High School were inaugurated over the weekend of Jan. 19-21 with the Virginia Junior Championships. A total of 110 players participated in seven draws.

The most hotly contested final was in the Boys Under 17 (BU17) draw, where Baltimore's Jacob Himmelrich and McLean's Bob Montgomery steamrolled through the first four rounds without either of them dropping a game. Listed at #27 and #29 in the USSRA's initial season rankings, they battled through five tough games before an overflow crowd that included a sizable contingent from Baltimore who had come to support Himmelrich. He eventually got the win, 9-10, 9-3, 9-4, 9-10, 9-3. Ryan Maher of St. Louis took third place over Patrick Kruse, and the consolation draw went to Arlington's Nicholas Adams, the winner over Patrick Harris of Washington.

The only other final to go more than three games was in the Boys Under 13 draw, where twin brothers Peter and Philip Sopher of Washington went four games. Peter, who is ranked #24, took the first two, 9-3 and 9-4, but Philip, ranked #54, pushed him to extra points in the third and won it 10-8. Peter then closed out with a 9-4 win in the fourth. Third and fourth places in the BU13 draw went to two Washingtonians, Nick Echeverria beating Alex Gross, 9-5, 9-5, 7-9, 10-8. McLean's John Devor won the consolation draw.

Two sisters from Buffalo, New York, went to the finals in the Girls Under 17 draw. Julia Drury, 16, who was listed at #28 when the USSRA released their initial national rankings earlier this month, prevailed over her 15-year-old sister, Lauralynn, who was ranked #40. The two of them had given up a total of only 12 points in winning all 15 of their games leading up to the finals. The championship went to Julia, 9-3, 9-6, 9-5.

Of the 12 points given up by Julia and Lauralynn in the early rounds, eight were scored by 14-year-old Christine Montgomery of McLean. She lost to Julia Drury in the semi-finals, 9-5, 9-0, 9-3, and went on to take third place, 9-3, 9-4, 9-4, over Libby Martin of St. Louis. Christine also won her own age group – the Girls Under 15 draw – in a 4-player round robin. Second place for GU15 went to Andrea Wood, 13, of Washington.

In the semi-finals, Johnson beat McLean's Alex Hufford. The 3rd-place match went to Tashjian over Hufford, 9-3, 9-5, 9-0. Jake Gross of Washington finished 5th, winning the consolation final, 10-8, 9-0, 9-7.

The final for the Boys Under 19 draw saw the top two players on St.Albans team face off. Gifford Sommerkamp of Bethesda beat McLean's Scott Hackman, 9-3, 9-4, 9-6. Both had reached the finals without losing a game. The same was true in the Girls Under 19 draw, where Elizabeth Thompson of Villanova, Penn., took the title over Camilla Lancaster, 10-9, 9-3, 9-0.

Rankings for Local Players

(Jan. 2001) Juniors from the D.C. area have been getting a lot of tournament play and moving steadily up in the national rankings. The initial 2001 rankings, posted to the USSRA website in January, had them listed at 24th and 54th.

In its latest rankings for juniors, posted April 16th, the USSRA listed the following Maryland, D.C. and Virginia players.

Mark Allen Organizes Gremlins Team

(Jan. 2002) Mark Allen has announced plans to start a "Gremlins Squad" for local juniors aged 11 and under. According to Mark, the squad's training sessions will initially be intermittent, as his schedule permits, but "if it proves to be fun and everyone is committed, then I intend to turn it into a once weekly session next season." He is also investigating the possibility of the Gremlins traveling together as a team to a couple of future stars tournaments, and is trying to find a sponsor to cover the cost of team clothing. Training sessions will be 75 minutes long, and will cost $12. The first three will all be held at The Potomac School on Feb. 17th, and March 3rd and 17th, starting at 4:30, with members of the Potomac Varsity squash team acting as coaches. Interested players should contact Mark.

Record Numbers of Washington Area Juniors Turning to Squash

Schools Lead the Way

As in traditional squash centers Philadelphia and Boston, DC juniors squash is centered in private schools, where parents are aware that Ivy League coaches actively seek talented juniors. The Potomac School and Madeira School in McLean, and Alexandria's Episcopal High School have long established squash programs. In the District, Sidwell Friends has a team and programs are being established at National Cathedral School and St. Albans. In Montgomery County, Holton Arms is considering squash. Hunt Richardson, head squash professional at The Sports Club/LA and organizer of the Bulldog Squash program for NCS and St. Alban's, says, “because of the tidal wave of juniors squash, it's only a matter of time before the independent school league recognizes squash as a legitimate school sport.”

Sanctioned team sport or not, the juniors squash season is in full swing, running from mid-November to the end of February. Potomac School with its four new courts has the biggest program. Parent and squash enthusiast Dan Montgomery reports that 60 kids came out for Potomac squash this season. With coaches Wendy Lawrence and Mark Allen (a top English player and coach who has succeeded Ken Hiscoe), Potomac has varsity and junior-varsity teams for both boys and girls. Wendy reports that the girls varsity squad has 12 players.

Episcopal is in the process of building five new courts which will be ready for the Virginia Juniors Tournament, a Total Squash tour event, January 19 to 21. Athletic director Whitt Morgan says Episcopal squash “is clearly growing.” Coached by Geoff Moorehead and South African Jan Botha, Episcopal's teams comprise 12 varsity boys, 13 varsity girls, and 10 junior-varsity boys. (Some school schedules are available on the Calendar page.)

At Madeira, Jerry Sardone, fresh from a USSRA coach's clinic, coaches a team of 16 girls. Dottie Hayden, who oversees Madeira squash, says a highlight of the season will be the Mercersburg (Pennsylvania) Invitational Tournament on December 9. Mercersburg Academy - a two hour drive north of Washington - whose students gravitate to the elite northeast institutions where squash is an intercollegiate sport, is in the process of building ten international courts. Like Potomac, Madeira also plays teams such as Baltimore's Bryn Mawr and Roland Park, as well as Mercersburg and Sidwell.

Bulldog Squash Clinics and D League

(Nov. 2000) Hunt Richardson's Bulldog Squash is underway four days a week and will run until the end of February on the new courts at the Sports Club/LA. It includes such talented players as Maret's Gifford Summerkamp (ranked 39 nationally in the boys under 17) and St. Alban's Scott Hackman (# 20) as well as Peter and Phillip Sopher, who have made a promising start in the under 13 category. Hunt's Bulldogs will play matches at the Naval Academy and against George Washington University.

Wendy Lawrence and Mark Allen are running weekend clinics at Potomac School, where both Bob Montgomery (# 36 in the under 17s) and Christine Montgomery (#15 in the under 15 girls) are standouts.  There are now 30 players in the Potomac School clinic and a waiting list that may lead to a third session starting after Christmas.

In D league play, now underway, the Chevy Chase Club is fielding a team of juniors that includes Andrea Wood (#18 in the under 13s). The team, coached by Doug White, a Holton parent, is seeking additional players to join Holton's Niki White and Margaret Sopher and NCS's Helen Snodgrass.

Juniors Compete in Australia

(Jan. 2001) Ken Hiscoe, former no. 1 in the world and well-known teaching professional, led a delegation of 33 top American juniors on a month-long squash tour of Australia last summer. If you read the report in the August/September issue of Squash Magazine you know they did surprisingly well.

The American boys took three of the top six spots in the Boys under 16 (BU16) draw, with William Broadbent of Greenwich, Connecticut, finishing first, and the girls did almost as well in their under 16 draw (GU16), taking 2nd and 5th.

The players were also entered in the Australian Territory Junior Championship in Canberra, and had a series of six matches against selected teams from Sydney.

Between tournaments, they trained with some of Australia's top pros - Geoff Hunt, Pat Gillette, Dean Landy, Rodney Martin and Adam Schreiver. The extracurricular programme included side trips to Australia's Great Barrier Reef and Gold Coast.

NCSRA to Sponsor Junior Clinics

(Jan. 2001) The NCSRA is pleased to announce that it is sponsoring a series of juniors clinics during the first few months of 2001. These clinics, which will be held free of charge, are one element of the NCSRA's ongoing effort to introduce juniors to squash and to enhance the skills of those already playing the game. Funding for the clinics comes from the William H. G. FitzGerald Junior Squash Development Fund. This fund was established in 1998 to promote junior squash in the Washington metropolitan area.

The juniors clinics will be run by the area's local squash professionals and will be held at their clubs or schools. While there is no charge for the clinics and they are open to juniors of any ability, attendance needs to be limited to ensure each junior has an opportunity to receive proper instruction and have a significant amount of time on the court. As a consequence, we ask that you contact the club or school professional as soon as possible to reserve a spot for the particular clinic(s) you are interested in attending.

The first clinic will be held Sunday, January 28th, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Worldgate Sport and Health Club in Herndon. To reserve a spot for this clinic, call Worldgate's squash professional Sarah Hammond at 703-709-9100 or E-mail Sarah at Hammond_worldgate@hotmail.com

The second clinic will be on Sunday, February 25th, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Sports Club/LA, 1170 22nd Street between L and M Streets. To reserve a spot for this clinic call Hunt Richardson, the Sports Club's squash professional, at 202-974-6600 or E-mail Hunt at SQUASHY1@aol.com.

Local Juniors at 2001 Nationals

Nine Washington area juniors saw action at the U.S. Junior Closed Championships played on March 9th-11th in Princeton. Among them, they won a total of four matches in the main draws, and eight in the consolations, including a couple wins against higher-ranked opponents.

None of the local players had more success than Peter Sopher of Washington, who reached the round of 16 in the main draw for boys under 13 (BU13), then advanced to the quarterfinals in the consolation draw. He was knocked out of the main draw by 3rd-ranked Trevor McGuinness of Merion Station, PA, but not without a fight, winning the 3rd game 9-5. In the consolation quarters, Peter lost to 9th-ranked James Clark of Greenwich, CT. His brother Philip ran into 2nd-ranked Travis Judson of Greenwich in the opening round, losing in three, but then Philip picked up a 5-game win in the consolation draw against a player ranked seven notches ahead of him at no. 31, Brian O'Toole of Short Hills, NJ. Philip was then eliminated in four games by William Browne of Greenwich.

Christine and Bob Montgomery of McLean both compiled winning records in the GU17 and BU17 draws, respectively. Christine, who had to move up one age level for this tournament, did not appear to let it affect her. She won her opening match, 3-0, and went five games in the 2nd round before losing to Lindsay Raden of Philadelphia, ranked 11th among girls under 19. Christine then picked up two 3-0 wins in the consolation draw before falling to 8th-ranked Frances McNeely of Newtown Square, PA.

Bob Montgomery followed a similar path, losing in the 2nd round to Denver's Otto Schlosser, then getting two consolation wins before being knocked off by Breck Bailey of Greenwich. One of his wins was against a higher-ranked player – Jay Boothby of Philadelphia, listed at no. 22, seven slots ahead of Montgomery.

The other local victory went to Washington's Andrea Wood. After losing an opening match in the main draw, she survived a 4-game consolation battle with Whitney Roller of Haverford, PA, then fell to Charlotte Steel of Greenwich.

Local Junior Finishes 2nd at 2000 Nationals

(April 2000)

The semi-finals, however, shaped up as a regular bear fight. In a tournament virtually devoid of upsets, David faced the #2 seed, Drew Blacker, of Summit, NJ, who had also coasted through the first three rounds without dropping a game. David won the first game, 9-3, but then dropped the next two, 5-9 and 4-9. He evened the match with a 9-2 win in game four, but looked to be on the brink of elimination in game five when he fell behind 7-2. It turned out to be a gut check that he was ready to answer, storming back to take eight of the next nine points for a 10-8 win and a berth in the finals.

There he ran into the #1 seed, Joseph Raho, of Rye, NJ, ranked 2nd in the country. (Top-ranked Andrew Zimmerman, of Brooklyn, NY, became ineligible for the BU-13 draw when he passed his 13th birthday before the tournament. He competed at BU-15, where he is ranked 15th.). Raho had had an easy semi-final win, losing only six points to the #5 seed, Chris Ehlinger, of Radnor, PA.

Several other local players also did well in Hartford. Christine Montgomery, of McLean, ranked 22nd among girls under 15, lost in the first round against 14th-ranked Gretchen Johnson, of Portland, OR, but then came back to win three straight consolation matches, two of them hard-fought matches against players ranked ahead of her. When the dust settled, she was in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, where she lost to the eventual consolation champion, 5th-ranked Ashley Eyre, of Haverford, PA, 4-9, 1-9, 1-9. Coincidentally, Gretchen Johnson, who beat Christine in the first round, also ended her run in the consolation quarterfinals, losing in straight games to 4th-ranked Stephanie Barnet, of Gillette, NJ.

Andrea Wood, of Washington, faced 3rd-seeded Aly Brady, of Wyndmoor, PA, in the first round of the GU-13 draw. Andrea, ranked 20th, was no match for Brady, but came back to get a straight-game win in the consolation bracket against 33rd-ranked Jennifer Coxe, of Greenwich, CT. She lost in four games in the next round to Charlotte Steel, of Greenwich.

Scott Hackman, of McLean (ranked 20th), and Gifford Sommerkamp, of Bethesda (47th), had quite an impact on the BU-17 draw. They both lost in the first round, but then got two consolation wins each. Eventually, Scott knocked Gifford out of the tournament, 9-2, 9-5, 9-3. He was eliminated himself in the next round by 7th-ranked Alex Tilton, of Rochester, NY, 2-9, 9-2, 5-9, 7-9.

All the results for local players:
