US Junior Open.

 

The US Junior Open was held at Yale University the weekend before Christmas. This tournament just seems to just keep growing year after year with squash players traveling from all around the world as far a field as Australia, South Africa, England, Mexico, El Salvador and Canada. The tournament has gained “Rising Star” status from WISPA (Women’s International Squash Players Association) which gives world ranking points to the U-19 girls. This has encouraged some of the top ranked world class players to come and compete in this event.

Wendy Lawrence and Brian O Hora brought nine players from Results the Gym to compete in this event, David Canner, Peter and Philip Sopher, Mike Maruca Nick Echeverria, Alex Gross, Andy Maruca, Joe Powden, Tribbie Nassikas and Alison McDonough.

The boys U-19 age group had a total of 90 competitors with USA’s Trevor McGuinness seeded to take the title. Both Peter and Philip Sopher played some really tough matches and got knocked out in the round of 32. David Canner lost in the last 16 and went into the consolation where he won two more matches before being beaten by the eventual consolation winner Jesus Pena. (El Salvador)

Alex Gross, Nick Echeverria and Mike Maruca competed in the boys U-17 age group along side 97 other competitors. Nick Echeverria lost in the round of 64 in a marathon 3-2 match. Alex progressed and lost in the last 32 to the eventual winner Antonio Diaz Glez. Mike Maruca now studying at Exeter Academy went all the way to the quarter finals before losing a close 3-0 to Thomas Mattsson the eventual 3rd place winner.

The boys U-15 saw a draw of 84 competitor’s battle it out with Canada’s Brian Hong seeded to take the title back to Canada. Results and D.C were represented by Andy Maruca and Joe Powden. Joe lost to the No1 ranked US player Danny Greenberg in the last 32. Andy went through to the last 16 before being beaten by the No2 seed Brian Cantel.

The girls U-17 had a total of 58 competitors. Here D.C was represented By Alison McDonough and Tribbie Nassikas. Alison lost to Andrea Echeverria form El Salvador 3-0 in the round of 64. Tribbie went through to the round of 32 where she lost to Lauren Sachvie of Canada. Both girls played some very good squash in what was the most competitive draw of the tournament.

 

Clean sweep for Results juniors in Baltimore.

 

Last November Meadow Mill was host was host to Baltimore’s premier junior squash event “the Baltimore Junior Open”. There were 130 competitors from all along the eastern seaboard, some as far a field as Chicago. D.C squash was represented by 19 players with many of them looking to take home some silver wear. Which they did!

 

In the boys U-19 brother Peter and Philip Sopher (Results) battled out a very closely contested four set match. Peter won the match 3-1 and brought home the boys U-19 title. Earlier this season Peter was a member of the winning boys U-17 national team who competed in and won the Can Am games. Potomac School’s Aaron Kur was the plate winner with a 3-0 win over Christopher Chomiak

In the boys U-17 Nick Echeverria (Results) over came some old demons and beat rival Nick Sisodia (Chicago) in a nail biting 3-2 victory. Earlier this season Nick lost a 2-0 lead and eventually the match 3-2 to Sisodia in a selection event at UPenn. Great win Nick! Alex Gross who is steadily rising back up the ranks took a well earned 3rd place beat Delaware’s Kevin Cecala in a comfortable 3-0 victory. Keep up the good work Alex! Jamie Beddow of Potomac School was the plate winner with a 3-1 victory over Ben Schactel

The boys U-15 saw two of D.Cs rising stars Andy Maruca (Results) and Joe Powden (Results) fight it out in the semi finals. Andy took the match and earned his place in the final against Delaware’s No.1 seed Hunter Bouchard. Andy played some of the best squash of his young career and took the match 3-0. Joe finished off his tournament with a comfortable 3-0 win and 3rd place. Well done lads!

 

In the girl’s divisions D.C. squash was represented by Alison McDonough, Tribbie Nassikas, Olivia Sealander and Lindsay McDonough.

In the girls U-19 age group Alison McDonough reached the quarter finals and lost to the No 1 seed Libby Brown from Baltimore.

Tribbie Nassikas who has made great strides in her game over the last 6 months lost in the semi finals to the No2 seed Clare Kuensell in a tight 3-0. In the 3rd/4th play off Tribbie was up against Shannon Harrington of Philly and lost in tie break in the 5th ending up 4th place.

In the girls U-15 Lindsay McDonough came up against the No 1 seed in the first round. Lindsay gave a great performance but Alexis Saunders of Delaware was just too strong and won 3-0.

 

All in all the D.C juniors made us very proud that weekend. We saw some fantastic squash, but most importantly we saw a lot of happy young squash players competing to the best of there ability. Well done all!

 

 

 

 

 

 

National Capitol Grand Prix 2.

 

The weekend of 9th-11th of Dec saw the first of D.C. junior events take place at Episcopal High School. Entries for this year’s event were down however due to some schools event which popped up at the last minute. Even thought he draws were smaller this did not take away from the quality of squash which was seen.

In the boys U-19 event Results own Alan Lutz cruised though the draw and won the final with out even dropping a single point beating Potomac Schools Zach Swope 9-0 9-0 9-0. On another note, congratulations to Alan on his acceptance into the Naval Academy this year!

Alex Gross (Results) continued his great performances from Baltimore and won the boys U-17 title beating Potomac Schools Jamie Beddow in straight games. Also congratulations to Nick Echeverria as that same weekend he won the boys U-17 title at the Brown Juniors at Brown University in Rhode Island. Another two titles for Results that weekend!

In the boys U-15 Joe Powden defeated a higher ranked Omar Sobhy to earn a place in the final against local rival Andy Maruca. Joe took the first game off a tentative Maruca but then Andy found his groove and took the match 3-1. Results are very proud of your performances this year boys!

In the boys U-13 Robbie Rasmussen of Results took the title by beating Hunter Mathews of Potomac School 3-0. Robbie has been putting a lot of hard work in over the last year and this is a well earned victory. Keep up the good work Rob!

The girls U-19 we had a round robin. The winner from group 1 was Haley Milbourne from Baltimore and she played the winner from group 2 Tribbie Nassikas. Haley ranked 23 in the country beat a very tentative Nassikas 3-0 in the final. In the 3rd/4th play off Emily Kellar of Baltimore beat Potomac Schools Sara Nawaz in a very tight five setter.

The girls U-17 saw a draw only consisting of D.C players. Here we saw Tribbie Nassikas win her group to earn a place in the final against group 2 winner Yasmin Atefi. Nassikas won the final in an easy 3-0. Results own Olivia Sealander played in the 3rd/4th play off and beat Camilla Nawaz comfortably 3-0.

Top seed Julia Hemmindinger (Baltimore) ranked 33 in the country ran away with girls U-15 age group not even dropping a single game. Potomac Schools Heidi Fisher came in 2nd and Lindsay McDonough came in 3rd.

Once again the top seed in the girls U-13 had an easy enough time and cruised through all her competitors without dropping a game. Amanda Sobhy of New York beat Camille Lanier of D.C 3-0 in the final of the girls U-13. Sobhy is a junior to watch out for the years to come!

Congratulations to David Canner and Alan Lutz on being accepted into college. David’s first choice was Princeton University and he was accepted just a couple of weeks ago.
