Potomac Wins the Summer Finals

The summer 2000 season was won by Potomac, when they went to Arlington and swept all three matches by identical scores of 3-1. The matches were more even than the scores would suggest, with the majority of rallies won by the non-server. In the #2 match alone, there were 82 handouts against a total of 64 points scored.

- #1, Vikram Chandra (POT) def. Mark Price (ARL), 3-1 (9-2, 3-9, 9-0, 9-5)
- #2, Andrew Strasfogel (POT) def. Tom Hafer (ARL), 3-1 (9-7, 9-5, 8-10, 9-7)
- #3, Steve Fidler (POT) def. Mike Gebremedhim (ARL), 3-1 (9-7, 6-9, 9-7, 9-3)

Semi-Finals

The summer season semi-finals went to Arlington and Potomac, setting up a June 27th showdown between those two teams on Arlington's courts. Arlington won by forfeit when the 4th-place team from Rio Center announced that they would not be able to field a team for the semi-final match scheduled for June 20th.

By contrast, the other semi-final, with Washington Sports Club visiting Potomac, was hotly contested. The #1 and #2 matches both went five games, leaving the overall result in doubt right to the last.

- #1, Andrew Strasfogel (POT) def. Andrew Bogle (WSC), 3-2
- #2, Bruce Simons-Morton (POT) def. Clint Fisher (WSC), 3-2
- #3, Steve Fidler (POT) def. Richard Jerome (WSC), 3-0

Playoff Schedule

Because Washington Sports beat Rio Center, 4-2, in head-to-head matches during the regular season, WSC finishes 3rd and Rio is 4th. The playoffs will start on Tuesday, June 20th, with Rio at Arlington and WSC at Potomac.

To be eligible for the playoffs, players must be NCSRA members in good standing and must have played in three summer league matches. In an earlier announcement, League Coordinator Bruce Simons-Morton, asked clubs to "please referee matches. For league, I like the system where someone from one team refs, while a person from the other team is the marker. These two would switch roles after each game."

B League goes to Shortened Summer Schedule

In the interest of stream-lining league play and cutting back on court time, the B League is going to a shortened summer season. League Coordinator Bruce Simons-Morton polled team captains last month on his proposal to have the season start in April and finish by the end of June. No one expressed any opposition, so Bruce confirmed the plan this week.

Eight teams are scheduled to participate, Potomac Squash Club, Metropolitan Club, University Club, Rio Center, Washington Sports Club, Arlington and two teams from Bethesda. The schedule, starting April 25th and ending June 13th, does not allow enough time for every team to play home and away against every other team, so each team will play home and away against four opponents. The four teams with the best records will have a playoff during the last two weeks of June.

As usual for the summer season, teams will consist of three players. Matches will be according to international rules, games to 9 points, as always. Though stopping short of requiring officials for all matches, Bruce encouraged team captains to have their matches refereed by non-playing team members or qualified club members not on the team. (The NCSRA requirement that all leagues matches be refereed has only been applied in the D League for this summer, with the intention of expanding it to all leagues next year.)

For next Fall, Bruce has proposed a season starting in September and finishing in December or mid-January, but no final decision on that has been made.
