Bethesda Takes the Summer Title

Bethesda picked up the summer D League championship with a 2-1 win at the Pentagon. Captain Ken Harney, playing in the #1 slot for the second week in row, lost three straight to Pentagon's Chris Schroeder, but the other two Bethesda players, Henri Barkey and Jean-Luc Monnier, both got 3-0 wins to wrap up the title.

Bethesda and Pentagon Advance

Although they dominated their division during the regular season, Bethesda had all they could handle from The Fitness Company in Monday's semi-final. Playing on their home courts, they took two out of three matches, but had only a 6-5 edge in games. Captain Ken Harney, playing in the #1 slot for the first time this season, was swept by TFC's Jay Anderson and commented later that he "was totally mystified by Anderson's high, looping, wicked serves." Leading the opening game, 5-0, Harney lost the serve and "almost never got it back." The visitors needed to win one more match to advance to the finals, and they had their best shot at #2, with three games going to extra points. Bethesda's Henri Barkey took game one over TFC captain Claude Hanley, 10-9, and followed with a 9-2 win in game two, but Hanley bounced back with a 10-9 win in the third, and again pushed Barkey to the limit in the fourth, eventually dropping it 8-10.

Pentagon had a somewhat easier time in their home match with Arlington 3. The visitors brought an enthusiastic cheering section, and threatened an upset in the #2 match, with Art Scibelli taking the first two games, 9-4 and 9-6. However, ironman George Philipps eventually asserted himself, taking the last three games and the match. At #1, Joe Madeira became only the third player this season to take a game off Pentagon's Chris Schroeder, but it was ultimately not enough.

August 7
Bethesda, Arlington3, Pentagon, TFC in the Playoffs

With one more week to go in the regular season, the playoff picture was largely settled last night, and there were a couple of surprises. In the Northern Division, the 2nd-place team from Univ. of Maryland forfeited two matches at 3rd-place Arlington 3, and finished the night with a 0-3 whitewash that knocked them out of the playoffs. Meanwhile, 1st-place Bethesda, playing on their home courts, swept Chevy Chase to wrap up the division title. (Arlington 3 could end up matching Bethesda's record with a 3-0 win at Chevy Chase next week, and a 0-3 Bethesda home loss to Arlington 1, but Bethesda would still finish first because they have a 5-1 head-to-head record against Arlington 3.)

In the Southern Division, the two leaders squared off at Pentagon, and the home team got a 3-0 sweep over The Fitness Company, leapfrogging them into first place. The #2 match between Pentagon's George Philipps and TFC's Len Fleisig may prove to be the pivotal match of the regular season. It went five games, and the win by Philipps gives Pentagon a two-match lead in the standings with one week to go. Since Pentagon now has the tie-breaker advantage over TFC, they only need to win one match next week at Washington Sports Club to win the division. The Fitness Company will host W/T/R.

The Philipps-Fleisig match was refereed by the USSRA's National Director of Referees, Ben Harris, who happens to play at Pentagon. He was on hand to mentor the referees, and decided to give a demonstration for the final match of the night.

The playoffs start in two weeks, on Aug. 21st, with Arlington 3 visiting the Southern Division winner, and the Southern Division runner-up going to Bethesda.

Adjusted Standings

With the membership payments that were made this week, the final adjustments have been made in the league standings, and they have been little affected by eligibility. In fact, only two default matches, originally credited to W/T/R when their opponents failed to show, have been converted to mutual defaults, because the two W/T/R players were ineligible. The standings shown above will not be subject to further adjustment, except as a result of action on the courts over the next two weeks.

Visiting captain report: The Abdellatif-Vasquez match was a thriller. Ayman had Javier down 6-2 in the fifth and looked like he was going to cruise to victory. But Javier reached down and tapped into some special fuel compartment carried by highly competitive tennis players--his true game is tennis not squash--and began hitting double-handed backhands and grunting like John McEnroe, and simply refused to lose. Javier took the last seven points, overwhelming an exhausted Abdellatif. Great match! - Ken Harney
