August 30, championship

The Division 3 finals took a familiar turn when Potomac Squash Club surprised Sports Club/LA on their home courts, giving Potomac a sweep of the championships in Divisions 1-3. (They had no team in Division 4.) After Potomac wrapped up the title with wins in the #2 and #3 matches, Chris Banks gave the home team something to cheer about in a matchup of undefeated #1 players. Down two games to one against PSC's Ryan Maher, including a thorough drubbing in game one, Banks kept stretching out the rallies with some brilliant defensive shots, and Maher eventually tired, dropping the last two games by identical 9-4 scores. Potomac's Norman Ireland was in complete control of the #2 match, giving up only seven points in three games. At #3, the hard drives and cross-courts of PSC's Jon Shanfield were matched against Jon Pavluk's fluid style and patient defensive game. Pavluk took the first game, and Shanfield the next two. Pavluk was up 5-4 in the 4th, and looked like he might have a shot at giving SCLA the match they needed for the championship, but Shanfield took the serve and reeled off five straight points for the win.
