Finals, May 12

The long winter season ended with a surprise flourish Saturday when Washington Sports Club traveled to Tenley and came away with an 8-7 win in games. Peter Brown opened with a 3-0 sweep over Stu Davis in the #4 match, and Bryce Rowland followed with a 3-1 win at #1 against Jim Beachler. Tenley captain Will Corbin, down 1-2 in the #3 match, recovered for a 3-2 win over Brad Williams, but the two games won by Williams were enough to give WSC the title. The #2 match between Tenley's Oakes Hunnewell and WSC captain Tim Raducha-Grace, which had been scheduled for Tuesday, May 15th, was declared a forfeit.

Semi-finals, May 10

It was a photo-finish when the University Club visited Tenley for their semi-final. The two teams split, 2-2, but Tenley advanced with a 9-8 advantage in games. Next, they welcome Washington Sports Club, 4-0 winners over Bethesda, for the finals on May 12th and 15th. The #1, #3 and #4 matches will be played on Saturday, but the #2 match has been pushed back to Tuesday, because neither player could be available over the weekend.

Playoffs Start May 3rd

Tysons Sport & Health finished the regular season schedule in 1st place with one makeup match to play at UC, and only a 0-4 loss by Tysons could have dropped them from the top of the standings. (Some minor changes were made in the final standings due to player ineligibility. One Tysons loss and one UC loss were converted to wins, and a Tysons default loss to Worldgate became a mutual default.) Still, due to the mid-season departures of Zain Chughtai and Yousef Lesi, and a recent injury to Marwan Bitar, Tysons was finding it difficult to field a team. Even though they probably would have enjoyed a home court advantage throughout the playoffs, their captain, Jon Wall, generously decided to pull his team out of the playoffs, opening the door for another team to participate.

Identification of that extra team was complicated by the fact that Tysons would not be able to make up their match with UC. Giving UC four wins would obviously put them in the playoffs, but if they had played the match and lost all four (or even 3 of 4), they would have finished behind Chevy Chase. (This is one of the reasons Tom Steinmetz stipulated on April 6th that, if the match were not played, "BOTH TEAMS WILL BE GIVEN FOUR LOSSES.") Clearly, any assumption regarding the potential outcome of an unplayed UC/Tysons match would be subjective and unfair to some team.

Finally, it was decided that, since the goal is to have the four best teams in the playoffs, the solution would be to have Chevy Chase and UC play a challenge match for the final playoff slot - not an ideal solution perhaps, but far better than deciding the matter by executive order. Consequently, the playoff picture is as follows:

#4 seed - winner of the UC/CC challenge match

In the showdown of the week, Bethesda traveled to Arlington and picked up a 2-2 split, although they came within four points of going home with four match losses. Gary Pergl got a 3-0 win in the #2 match against Bethesda's Steve Hall, while Paul Reid of Arlington beat Dick Besha, 3-1, in the #4 match. At #1, Ann Monahan quickly took a 2-0 lead, before Bethesda's Hiro Konno tied her at 2-2 and then took game 5 in a 10-8 tiebreaker. Due to an afternoon snow storm, other scheduled matches were postponed, to be played on April 26th. The first-round playoffs, which were to be played on April 26th, have been rescheduled to May 3rd, with the finals set for the following week.

February 15

When the top two teams in the league faced off, Tysons had not lost a match on their home courts all season, and even though they were missing Zain Chugtai and Marwan Bitar, the evening started out looking like another steamrolling of a visiting team. Yousuf Lesi, Tysons' #1, took three close games from WSC's Tim Raducha-Grace, and Tysons' Jon Wall was in complete control of the #2 match, beating Bryce Rowland, 9-2, 9-4, 9-5.

When Tysons' Peter Appel won the first two games of the #4 match, the visitors were starting to wonder if they would win a game. But then WSC's #4, Shobhik Chaudhuri, kicked into high gear, sweeping the last three games of his match, while teammate Chris Miller was beating Dario Davies convincingly in the #3 match.
