Division 5 Archives (Was Division 4 until October 2003) Division 5 Current Season

September 10, Championship

With the best record during the regular season, Rio Center looked like the favorite going in, but they kept digging themselves deep holes, losing the first two games in each match. In the #2 match, Nitin Mahadev recovered with three straight wins to take the match. At #3, the last match of the evening, it looked for a while like Petr Nepozitek might pull it off again. He won games 3 and 4, and pushed it to 6-6 in the 5th, but visiting Matt Cowie had the final punch, taking the serve and three straight points to give Univ. of Maryland the match and the championship.

August 27

The top two teams in the Beltway Division both steamed into the finals without dropping a game. They will face each other in two weeks on Rio Center's courts. In the semi-finals, Maryland's undefeated Wasim Khan, the only player to win a match against Rio Center during the regular-season, easily handled Pentagon's Chris Schroeder, who was very much off his game. Pentagon's regular #2 and #3 players were missing and stand-ins Barry Hughes and David Tulchinsky both fought hard, each of them pushing a game to 9-5, but they were clearly overmatched. At Rio Center, WSC's #3 Andrea Rees came closest to an upset, dropping her last two games, 9-6 and 9-7, but the home team was never really threatened. Rio and UMD should make for an interesting final on September 10th. Excluding defaults, they had a combined regular-season record of 24-1 against the rest of their division. Rio Center won the head-to-head matchup with one default win and a 3-2 record in matches played.
