August 22 - Semi-Finals

Report by Muhammad Amer, Rio #1 captain
The squash extravaganza at Rio started at 6:30 and ended at about 9:00 PM. After some resistance in the fast-paced first game, #1 Wolfgang Fleischer (RIO-1) gave way to Patrick Harris (BET), who won the match in straight sets. In the other court, things had just started for what was set to be a roller-coaster ride for Rajesh and Matt. And what a match it turned out to be! #2 Matt (BETH) won a tough first game with a 10-8 tie-breaker, but Rajesh (RIO-1) came back by winning the next two games. The fourth game turned out to be a marathon, where Matt, after being down by 2-7, came back strongly to win the game by 9-7. Matt continued his stride by taking a 7-0 lead in the 5th game, and looked all set to wrap things up, but Rajesh had other plans! We got to witness an amazing fight back, where he came back to win the game by 9-7, and the match by 3-2. This put all the focus on the match that was already under way in the other court between #2 Vikram (RIO-1) and Juan Carlos (BET). It looked like anybody's match and anybody's final, with Juan Carlos winning the first game by 10-8 and Vikram winning the second game by 9-8. But Vikram took over the next two games to win the match by 3-1, and put Rio in the final with a 2-1 win against Bethesda.

June 20

"Good to the Last Drop" While Patrick Harris and Lynn Scott were putting in workmanlike wins over their visitors from Potomac, Barry Naft and John Shanfield, with 3-0 and 3-1 wins respectively, Matt Gelfand and Randall Scott both got their money's worth in a marathon, see-saw battle. This is what good league matches are all about: Gelfand took the first game in a 2-point tiebreaker, then Randall pranced through games two and three, virtually blanking his opponent to go up 2-1 in games. In game 4, the two players battled for every point along the way, with five tie scores at 2-2, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, and 7-7, before Gelfand tied up the match at two games a piece with a 9-7 win. Game 5 was a classic with four lead changes and four tie scores. Gelfand went ahead late in the game at 6-4, but Randall Scott battled back to 5-6, before handing over the serve. With another change of serve, Scott regained the lead at 7-6. With three hard fought points, Gelfand closed out the game, 9-7, and the match, 3-2. Both players exhibited good sportsmanship throughout the match, with many difficult calls in a tight match officiated expertly by Naft and Charlie Gunn.
