January 30, 2002 - For All the Marbles

Playing with the handicap of having to forfeit the #5 match because they had failed to qualify an eligible player, the Capital Hill team ripped through their championship tilt aagainst Virginia without dropping a game. The biggest surprise was probably the performance of Louisa Terrell, who had lost two of her four matches in the #2 slot during the regular season. She beat Leslie Galloway, who had cruised through the season, going 4-0 at #2 and 1-1 at #1, losing only to Carole Grunberg. In the finals, Terrell kept nailing nicks in the deep right corner and controlled the match throughout. (The inescapable conclusion: She was underrated and so was the player who handed her both her losses during the season - Noelle Chutkan of the Northwest team.) Virginia's crafty Martha Gaston gave Sarah Davidson a tough test at #4, pushing her to the wall in the first two games, but Davidson kept her focus and got the win in three. Sheila Reynolds also proved amazingly resilient at #1. She was off her game at the start, but had some brilliant rallies with Carole Grunberg in the 3rd and kept pace to 6-6. However, Grunberg proved that she was clearly the top player of the night. She pushed her game to the top and closed out with a 9-6 win.

The Results Squash Director, Wendy Lawrence, was on hand to referee the #1 and #4 matches. League Coordinator Debbie Davis refereed at #2 and Martha Gaston at #3. After it was all over, Capital Hill captain Mona Butterfield broke out a bottle of champagne and everyone joined in celebrating the inaugural season for the new league.

Capital Hill 4, Virginia 1 (at Results the Gym)
- #1, Carole Grunberg (CH) def. Sheila Reynolds (VA), 3-0 (9-2, 9-3, 9-6)
- #2, Louisa Terrell (CH) def. Leslie Galloway (VA)), 3-0 (9-5, 9-4, 9-5)
- #3, Abby Moser (CH) def. Deborah Boehm-Davis (VA), 3-0 (9-1, 9-3, 9-0)
- #4, Sarah Davidson (CH) def. Martha Gaston (VA), 3-0 (9-7, 10-8, 9-5)
- #5, Amelia Davis (VA) won by default

The second season for the women's league opens next week, with Northwest playing Capital Hill at Results, and the Downtown team visiting Virginia at Tysons Sport & Health. Coordinator Davis is going to recommend that all four teams participate in the playoffs, with the regular season records determining only the home court advantage in each round.

November 28, 2001 - Let the Games Begin

The new women's league kicked off its inaugural season with matches at Potomac Squash Club and Tysons Sport & Health. At Potomac, with the Northwest team hosting Capital Hill, the atmosphere was definitely festive. In contrast to the "squash and run" approach common in some of the open divisions, extra players showed up just to watch, and no one left the club until the last point was played at about 8:30.

Northwest 4, Capital Hill 1 (at Potomac Squash Club)
- #1, Liz Arens (NW) def. Kim Fisher (CH), 3-0 (9-3, 9-6, 9-6)
- #2, Noelle Chutkan (NW) def. Louisa Terrell (CH), 3-1 (9-4, 8-10, 9-7, 9-6)
- #3, Betsy Colice (NW) def. Eva Zuffova (CH), 3-0 (9-3, 9-6, 9-6)
- #4, Andrea Rees (CH) def. Jennifer Moran (NW), 3-2 (4-9, 9-2, 1-9, 9-5, 9-3)
- #5, Nicole White (NW) def. Catherine Morrison (CH), 3-0 (9-3, 9-2, 9-5)
referees: Noelle Chutkan, Nicole White, Andrea Rees, Betsy Colice, Liz Arens

Virginia 4, Downtown 1 (at Tysons Sport & Health)
- #1, Leslie Galloway (VA) def. Donna Sharpe (DT), 3-1 (6-9, 9-3, 9-1, 10-8)
