RIO Center 2, YMCA 1 (at RIO Center)
Malcolm Jensen sent this report of this match:
First, let me say that I'm sure RIO benefited from the coincidence of the
maintenance-related closing of the DC YMCA courts and the playoff
schedule, resulting in the match being played at RIO.
All three matches were played with serious intensity. To everyone's
pleasure, regardless of the stakes, the sportsmanship was unblemished.
All players played really hard, and absolutely fairly.
The #2 match, Mike Parker (RIO) vs Don Silverstein (DCY), and
#3 match, Malcolm Jensen (RIO) vs David Gunn (DCY), led things off.
As a consequence, I didn't see any of the Parker-Silverstein match.
I can say that those who watched found the match riveting, and the
scoresheet indicates that each of the games was longer and more
competitive than the final score might suggest. Don won in
five, 9-5, 2-9, 9-4, 7-9, 9-4, with Peter Doren refereeing.
One comment that I heard is that Mike hit many putaway shots, but that
Don successfully got to most all of them. Having watched Don play
previously, I can attest to his scrappiness (in the best sense of the word).
The #3 match, Malcolm Jensen (RIO) vs David Gunn (DCY), was a real
test. I know. I was severely tested, and very fortunate to have survived
games 3 and 4, either of which could have ended the match. David won
the first 9-6, and won the second 9-6. He led 5-3 and 6-5 in the third,
and the score was dtied at 6 and at 7, before I escaped 9-7. In the fourth,
the score was tied at 5 and at 6, before I was able to squeak out another
9-7 win. Fortunately, for me, David who seemed to be successfully
battling fatigue from the end of game two, finally lost that battle, and a quick
game five. Steve Johnson refereed.
The #1 match, fittingly, would be the deciding match. Steve Johnson (DCY),
while playing hard and hitting with pace, appeared to have some real trouble
with the unconventional drop shots and extreme quickness to the ball
displayed by Rajesh Krishnamurthy (RIO). Rajesh won that game 9-3.
Regrouping, Steve got off to a good start in the second game, going up 3-0.
However, Rajesh, making gets that spectators had felt would be impossible,
and hitting those uncanny drop shots, came back to take the game 9-7.
Rajesh went up 5-0 in the third, and it looked to be over. Steve was not
ready to concede. The battle raged, with Steve hitting harder and better shots.
Rajesh, finally had match ball at 8-4 . . . only to have Steve win four rallies in a
row to 7-8. Rajesh won the serve and served for the match again. Again, Steve
held on, this time winning three rallies in a row to go up 9-8 and game ball.
Rajesh won two rallies - 9-9, match ball. Yet again, Steve won and served for
the game. Only to have Rajesh take the serve back, and this time win on his
fourth match ball opportunity. As you can see, even with this inadequate
recounting, reporting a score as 3-0 to Rajesh would give no sense of the fierce
competition and the high drama of this match. I refereed this one.
From what I saw in my match, and what I saw in the #1 match, I really regret
that I couldn't have watched Mike Parker's excellent effort - Don Siverstein's
well-earned win.
We at RIO are looking forward (I think.) to venturing to Results Gym next week.

We had a evening of intense, hard-fought, well-played squash at RIO. Excellent sportsmanship was
in evidence, as usual. Especially remarkable were the #2 and #3 matches. The #2 match was a
seesaw affair the whole way, with Mike Parker coming back from 0-1 and from 1-2 (in games) to
Steve Johnson, and from down match ball in the fifth, before winning at 10-8. At #3,
Peter Van Doren was awesomely dominant in the first game, was, in turn, dominated in the second,
failed to convert on three game balls in the third, only to lose the game on Don's Silverstein's first
game ball. That finish energized Don and sapped Peter, and Don went on to win the fourth game handily.

Prior to the match, Ira Schwartz lacerated his head on a locker. Afterwards
he went to the emergency room and got 8 stitches. His opponent William
Clarkson played with a very sore shoulder from a prior injury (not his
playing side of course). It was the battle of the wounded.

Wow! What a match! Will Corbin and Vikram Manikonda, who have
known each other, and played each other for many years (having won
a league championship as teammates at U of MD) played for about an
hour and a half. Vikram won seven game ball ralleys, and six match
ball ralleys, while Will won "only" five game ball ralleys and one match
ball ralley. However, Will won the one ralley that ended up counting
most . . . the last
