 Division 4 Summer 2004 Championship

August 26 - Championship

Last night, the match at RIO brought the Summer Div 4 season to a fitting close.  The two teams who had looked to be clearly the strongest throughout the Summer met in a hard-fought and extremely close deciding match.  At the #1 position, RIO's Zahid Shaikh, who grew during the season to be a dominating force in Div 4 (and produced some stunning results in Div 3, late in the Summer) faced UMD's unrated, but extremely highly-skilled Anuj Kumar.  Earlier, at UMD (during the regular season), Zahid escaped with a gritty win over an out-of-shape Anuj (10-9, 1-9, 10-9, 10-9), but by now, Anuj had been practicing hard, and was in very good condition.  At #2, RIO's Desi Bernard played UMD's Taimur Khan, whom he had just barely beaten at RIO during regular season play.  At #3, the aging (not to say aged) Malcolm Jensen faced Parth Sanghavi, who had at UMD, come back from a 0-2 deficit to beat Jensen 3-2.

Despite Zahid having grown to be a strong Div 3 level player,  Anuj dominated the #1 match.

Taimur having clearly won game one, and having been out of game two, earned a lead of 8-2 over Desi in the third game, only to have Desi claw his way back to 8-8.  Taimur called "no set."  Desi won the deciding point, and the match had turned.  Desi controlled the fourth and final game, to take the #2 match.

Malcolm won game one in the #3 match.  Parth won game two.  Malcolm took a substantial lead in the third game only to have Parth come back to 8 all.  With set at two, Parth won 10-8., to go up 2-1.  Again in the fourth game, Malcolm got to 8 only to have Parth tie it up.  With set at 2 again, Malcolm survived game four at 10-8, setting up the decisive fifth game.  Fortunately for the old guy, Parth seemed the more tired of the two.  In a reversal of their earlier match, this time Malcolm came back from behind to tally the victory.  Interestingly, this match took almost as long as the other two combined.

Well, on to the Fall/Winter season, without, I presume Anuj or Zahid, who will, no doubt, acquit themselves well at their well-earned higher level(s).
