Division 4 Current Season

March 18 Rio Center is the Winter 2004 League Champion

Last night at RIO, we had the intense final that many might have predicted, based on RIO's strong performance throughout the season, and on Results Gym's season-long invincibility of their top two players.

It was perhaps unfortunate that some of the drama ended fairly early in the evening.  RIO's #3, Desi Bernard, and #4, Rajesh Krishnamurthy, each won their matches with the loss of few points, against Stewart Davis and Paul McGonnigal, respectively.  As a consequence, the league championship was decided as soon as RIO's #1, Petr Nepozitek, and #2, Vikram Manikonda, scored a combined nine points.  As it happened, Petr scored 8 in his first game, while Vikram won his first game with 9.

Many of those playing and watching were unaware that the match was decided.  People found it difficult to choose whether to watch the high velocity #1 match, which Corey Norton won for Results 10-8, 1-9, 9-3, 9-2, or the longer, more contentious #2 match, which Gaston Astesiano won for Results 7-9, 9-5, 9-5, 2-9, 9-6.  In the first game of the #1 match, Petr had three game ball opportunities at 8-6 before Corey was able to prevail at 10-8.  In game two, Petr again failed to capitalize on game balls at 8-0 and 8-1 but finished it at 9-1 with his third game ball.  While the match was certainly not over at that point, Corey had begun to be able to deal with Petr's heavy pace, and Petr had begun to tire.  Corey closed out the match with strong games of 9-2 and 9-3.  On the other court, in the #2 match, Gaston prevailed in a tough, tough five games.  He and Vikram were drained physically and emotionally (as was the old guy refereeing, yours truely) before it was over.

Several of us ended the evening with food and beer at Hamburger Hamlet, downstairs in the RIO building, a very pleasant finishing touch to a long hard season of Division 4.  We would expect some of these players to see each other next season in Division 3.  Vikram Manikonda, coming off a disabling week+ of illness with high fever, and unable to play in the semi-finals, lost his #1 spot to Petr Nepozitek, who played well in the match against Corey Norton.  All three of these guys will likely move up.  Rajesh Krishnamurthy, coming off a disabling week+ of neck spasms, and unable to play in the semi-finals (and, indeed, until a few hours before the final) lost his #2/#3 spot to Desi Bernard.  Rajesh and Gaston will likely join teammates in the move up to Division 3.  None of the five will be embarrassed at the higher level.

RIO Center 4, University Club 0 (at University Club)
The University Club continued their recent policy of being even better hosts than they mean to be last night.  Receiving RIO at their lovely club, and onto their beautiful new international courts, they surrendered all four matches, but not without spirited effort.  Elizabeth Dupree, at #1, was the only home team player to take a game, but all played with sportspersonship (how's that for avoiding sexism) and zeal

RIO Center 4, Regency 0 (at RIO Center)
Again this week, we had the benefit that one of our opponent's top players had to opt out for illness.  Osama Amad was unable to come to RIO last night.  Partially as a result, RIO had a very successful match.  The matches were very hard-played with sportsmanship at a very high level.  In the #1 match, Don Konz won the first and third games, to put himself in good position to win the match.  Vikram Manikonda, matching Don's terrific effort with his own remarkable grit, was able to win games four and five.  In the #3 match, Ray Butcher, using guile and precision, adjusted to Vladimir Wolf's quickness (afoot and with racquet) and high velocity drives to take the third game.  However, youth was served as Vladimir won in four.

Rio Center 2, Results 2 (at Results)
Results handed Rio a wake-up call last night.  Corey Norton beat Vikram Manikonda 3-0, and Angel Botto beat Zahid Shaikh 3-1 (with Zahid forced to retire down 2-1, because of a reinjured pulled back that flared up midway through the second game).  Though winning at #3 and #4, this is the least succussful result for Rio so far this season.  The mood was consistently upbeat and pleasant, and the squash hard-fought, though each match was won and lost decisively.  Regardless of what one thinks of the present Administration, the folks at Results prove that Capitol Hill can still be a "good place to visit."

Rio Center 3, Worldgate 1 (at Worldgate)
Last night started on an unexpectedly pleasant note.  The traffic on the way from Rio to Worldgate was not gruesomely heavy.  The squash was, as has become the norm. intense and sportsmanlike.  Three of us from Rio won.  I did not.  Kenny Demick played better than I.  While I would like to think that I can reverse this result the next time we play, that might be unlikely.  He will be even better with more experience, and I will be even older.

commentary from Vikram Nehru:  Jon Wagshul and Denis Robitaille played
a splendid match.  Denis came back from 0-2 to level the score at 2-2 and
then led 6-1 in the fifth and final game.  Unfortunately for Bethesda,
Denis's luck and energy ran out at about the same time, and Jon eventually took
the fifth game and the match 9-6.  It was abosrbing to watch, but difficult
to referee, as the players were constantly getting entangled with each
other.  A hard fought match!

We had another of those hard-played team matches with consistently excellent sportsmanship at Rio tonight.  We also had another riveting individual match, this time at the #4 position.  Desie Bernard played for Rio against Rana Parshad for U of MD.  Rana won a tough first game 9-6.  He had game ball twice at 8-7 in the second, before losing 10-8.  In the third, Desie quickly got to 7-1, and to 8-2, but was out of gas.  Rana survived the game ball and ran all the way to 10-8 without losing serve.  We all thought the match was over.  Rana went up 4-0, and 5-1, and 6-3, only to have Desi come back to win 9-7, and force a fifth game, that we knew Rana didn't relish, but that we doubted Desie could survive.  In the final game, both players played with grit (read courage) and determination (read absolute unwillingness to give less than everything).  Desie ended up winning 9-6, but both players won the admiration of the many who had gathered to see this compelling match.

While sad to report that Worldgate could field only two players last night, I am happy to report that Martin Kube and Brian Gant arrived at Rio with the best of attitudes and played hard.  Martin, after figuring how to cope with Vikram Manikonda and Rio's 20 ft courts, and before being slowed by fatigue, took game four with a flourish.  Brian, less relaxed on court than his aged opponent, played some good squash, but failed to take a game.

Rio Center 4, Potomac Squash Club 0 (at Potomac Squash Club)
From Malcom J:  Another League season begins, the first in the redefined Division 4.  Although refereeing was in short supply, the matches were intensely contested and fairly played.  I can't comment on #1 and #2 matches, except to say that all four players looked reasonably happy about not having to play a game five.  At #3, I played Min Thura Strasfogel while enjoying the advantage that his youthful potential has not yet risen to the point at which it will pass my increasingly age-inhibited skills.  Erik Rind suggested (tongue-in-cheek?) that it was unfair for Malcolm Jensen to be playing for the visiting team on the Potomac Squash Club "Malcolm Jensen Exhibition Court".  #4 was the match of the night.  I refereed, while evenly-aged Tawhid Nawaz (age 50, Potomac) took on Peter Van Doren (age 48, RIO).  Peter took a 5-2 lead in game one, only to have Tawhid come roaring back to win 9-5.  After several good struggles at the beginning of game 2, Tawhid ran up to an 8-2 lead, only to have Peter dig in, and claw his way back to 8 all.  Several service trades later, Peter prevailed 10-9.  In game 3,  Peter led all the way to 8, comfortably ahead most of the way.  This time Tawhid dug in, and fought back to 8 all.  With both players serving game balls, Peter again prevailed 10-9.  Peter, having won the psychological advantage, rolled to 9-2 in game 4.  This was a heck of a match.
