February 17 - League Championship

RIO Center 4, Arlington Y 0 (at RIO Center)

Comment from Malcom Jensen: ArlingtonY brought a very strong team to RIO last night.  All of them played hard and well.  I was there misfortune that they had to deal with a RIO team blessed with four players all of whom are solid #1 position players.  In order of position on their team, Tom Hafer and Rich Taylor and Michael Lowe and Peter Bruce all played, as I said, hard and well.  Only Michael Lowe was able to win a game, and he won two.  In the games he won, he faced game ball, at 8-6 in the first game and at 8-4 in the third game.  In each case, he won the rally to take the serve, then served out the game.  Unfortunately for him, Rohith Shetty won games two, four and five at 9-2.  This was an extremely well-played match. 

Peter Bruce had the most difficult situation.  Playing #4, he should have been playing RIO's #4.  RIO doesen't really have a #4.  We pretty much have four #1's.  Anurag Uppal, who began playing squash just a year ago, is such a gifted athlete, and plays with such intense desire (a trait he shares with his three teammates), that he isn't rally an appropriate person to play #4.  Peter played well, but Anurag was a steamroller. 

I would like to say more about the #1 and #2 matches, but I refereed the #3 and #4 matches, and had no chance to see the others.  The #3 match was by far the longest, and finished substantially the latest.

While all four of the RIO players bid Division 4 "farewell," based on last nights play, they should see a lot of Michael Lowe in Division 3 this Summer.  If Tom Hafer and Rich Taylor continue to play ahead of Michael, I expect we'll see them in Division 3 as well.  As has been the case all season, the sportsmanship was excellent.  I think we are all learning how to enjoy playing well while playing within the fairly complex rules of our beloved game of squash.

We had an interesting match last night at the beautiful downtown SportsClub LA.  In the #1 match, Brian Gilmore came back from 8-1 down in the first game to win 10-9.  He then went up 6-0 in game two, only to have Emmanuel Kibet come back to win 10-8.  With Brian beginning to tire, Emmanuel won the last two games.  In the #2 match, Desi Bernard beat a fiercely-committed and fiesty Richard Spikerman.  At #3, Anurag Uppal showed remarkable athleticism, coming back to beat Harold Eder in four.  At #4, Rohith Shetty came back from 0-1, and 1-2, to win in five over a tiring (finally) John Herlihy.  This team match was more challenging and more fun than the final tallies would indicate.
