Winter 2004/05 Championship

Rio Center put the capstone on their astonishingly successful season Monday evening, defeating a very strong Bethesda team 3-1 in the league championship match. In the #1 spot Rahul Nene--certainly, in my opinion, the most dominant individual player in Division 5 this season with a perfect 13-0 record, almost entirely in the #1 slot--made short work of a very strong opponent, defeating Bethesda's Bob Fritz (6-2, all in the #1 slot!) in just three games. The #2 slot presented the identical situation as Srini Guruswami (15-1, mostly at #1 or #2) set back Matt Gelfand (6-0) in three. Bethesda has depth, and Juan Carlos Lazo (5-2) took the first game at #3, but Jonnie Isebor (16-3) came roaring back to take it in four. Finally Bethesda's depth was too much in the #4 slot, where Bethesda's Tom Faltens put away Rio's Otto Louis-Jacques in three games.

Congratulations not only to Rahul, Srini, Jonnie, and Otto but to their teammates Charles Bernard, Jude Offor, Nabil Syed, and Shyam Bindingnavale. Collectively they won more than three-fourths of their matches and more than three-fourths of their games, dominating every team they met this season. Great job guys!
